Do you need to be a tech company, or pass KYC, for a .tech?

No. The .tech registry has no sponsor and no registration restriction. A bakery could register one, though most owners build hardware, software or services. Radix checks nothing about your trade. ICANN rules require the registrant email to be verified, so we send a link, and that completes the identity step. We hold no ID image, no face scan and no company file. The order is paid in crypto from your balance. Founders can register the name before the company even exists. Your email stays private and is used for account notices only.

Your .tech and public RDAP data

On a public lookup, your .tech shows our privacy service in place of your email, the only contact data we collect. Investors, rivals and journalists can see the registrar, nameservers and dates, not who you are. That suits teams working quietly before a launch. Radix gets the registration data its rules require and keeps its own copy. Privacy is included at no cost. To see the result for yourself, follow our guide to checking what WHOIS shows.

Holding a .tech before the company exists

With the optional Domain protection, your .tech is registered in our company name, so the registry and RDAP show us. A transfer lock is on by default; transfers and DNS changes need confirmation from your account. We hold only your email. We release the data we hold only when Panamanian law requires it (a Panamanian court or prosecutor's order), or in a UDRP case. A person reviews complaints first. Once your company is formed, we move the name into its name at no charge.

Radix, Google's rival bid and the 2015 start

Six companies applied for .tech in ICANN's new gTLD process, Google among them. Radix, founded by Bhavin Turakhia, won and introduced the extension on 21 March 2015. It counted 467,017 names on 15 March 2023, per Wikipedia. Startups on .tech had raised over $2 billion in venture capital by August 2019. Cisco, Intel and the CES trade show use .tech names. GitHub's Student Developer Pack has offered a free first year. The registry has no sponsor and its zone supports DNSSEC.

Student offers, renewals and other .tech traps

A free or discounted first year, such as GitHub's student offer, ends with a full renewal. Porkbun charged $6.99 for the first year and $50.98 after that, on 19 October 2026. Check the renewal date and price before the name becomes part of your product. A new .tech is locked against transfer for 60 days. Malware or botnet control on a .tech is a strict exception, suspended on a documented report.

Porkbun's .tech prices, October 2026

Porkbun listed .tech at $6.99 for the first year as a sale, checked on 19 October 2026. Its regular registration, renewal and transfer price was $50.98. Our 8 October 2026 research did not include .tech at other registrars. Three years at Porkbun would cost $108.95 at those prices, so the first-year discount covers only a small part.

.tech questions

Is .tech worth it if the .com is free?

If the .com is free and affordable, most brands take it. A .tech fits when the .com is taken or when you want the sector in the name. Many startups hold both. Compare renewal costs, because .tech renews well above .com at most registrars.

Can I register a .tech in crypto for a startup that has not launched yet?

Yes. Pay from a crypto balance, give one verified email, and keep privacy on. Add Domain protection if you want the registry record to show our company. Later, we can move the name into your company's name for free, once the entity exists.

Does .tech support DNSSEC and IPv6 records?

Yes. The registry supports DNSSEC, and our DNS editor handles AAAA records for IPv6 along with A, CNAME, MX, TXT and CAA. You can also use your own nameservers, from two to thirteen, if your team runs its DNS elsewhere.

What happens to a .tech hosting malware?

Malware and botnets are strict exceptions. On a well-documented report, we suspend the domain without waiting for a court order. Other complaints, such as patent or copyright claims, need a decision from a Panamanian court. Reports go to [email protected], and no account is needed to send one.
