Quick answer

Can I register a .co domain from offshore without showing ID?

Yes. The .co registry has opened second-level names to anyone since July 2010, and it explicitly allows privacy services. We ask for one verified email and accept crypto only. At Isthmus Domains, an offshore domain registrar in Panama, a .co costs $31.99/year the first year and $31.99/year to renew (19 October 2026), paid in crypto with no KYC.

Is .co limited to Colombians, and is there an identity check?

No to both. Colombia's Ministry of ICT is the authority behind the registry. Second-level .co names have been open worldwide, first come first served, since 20 July 2010. You do not need a Colombian address, company or tax number. We ask for just one item: an email address you confirm, because ICANN rules require that check. No passport scan, no selfie, no proof of address. Payment is by crypto from your balance, never by card. The laws that apply to your content, in Colombia or elsewhere, still apply to you.

Is privacy allowed on .co?

Yes. The .co registry's support pages state that proxy and privacy services are permitted. We include privacy on every .co. A public query returns our privacy contact rather than your email, the only contact data we collect. The registrar, nameservers, dates and status codes remain visible. The registry still receives the data its rules require and keeps its own copy. Because .co is a country code, its own rules govern that copy, not ICANN gTLD policy.

Adding Domain protection to a .co

If you want the registry itself to see a company instead of you, add the optional Domain protection. The .co then sits in our company name. A transfer lock is on by default, so any transfer or DNS change needs your confirmation from the account. We hold only your email. We release the data we hold only when Panamanian law requires it (a Panamanian court or prosecutor's order), or in a UDRP case. A person reviews each complaint first. You remain the beneficiary.

How .co went from a university to GoDaddy

Colombia's code was delegated on 24 December 1991 to the Universidad de los Andes. On 7 February 2010, administration moved to .CO Internet S.A.S., picked by public tender. Worldwide registration opened on 20 July 2010. Neustar bought .CO Internet in 2014 for $109 million, and GoDaddy took over Neustar's registry business in 2020. Wikipedia counts about 2.2 million names in December 2018. Large firms use one-letter names, such as t.co, g.co and a.co. Colombia's Ministry of ICT remains the authority behind the extension today.

Good fits for .co

UseWhy .co fits
Startups and companiesThe two letters read as company and stay short.
Short linksX uses t.co, which shows how compact a .co URL can be.
Colombian businessesIt remains the national code for local trade.
Backup for a taken .comOne letter shorter, with a similar look.

Typing errors and other .co risks

Typing .co instead of .com is a common slip. Your visitors may land on the .com owner, and email can go astray. Wikipedia notes .co is sometimes used for typosquatting for that reason, so a .co that copies a .com brand invites a trademark dispute. The five-year limit means you cannot prepay a decade. First-year promotions at some registrars hide steep renewals. Availability is confirmed at order, so keep a second name ready.

.co renewals elsewhere, dated

On 19 October 2026, Porkbun listed .co at $15.76 the first year and $31.20 to renew. On 8 October 2026, Cloudflare charged $30.00 at cost, Namecheap $8.18 then $45.68, and Gandi $15.99 then $71.98. OrangeWebsite listed €48.00 and 1984 Hosting $47.99. A low first year often means a high renewal, so compare the second year.

.co questions

What does .co stand for?

Officially it is the country code of Colombia. Since the 2010 relaunch, the registry and many buyers treat it as short for company or corporation. Google treats .co as a generic extension rather than one aimed at Colombia, according to Wikipedia. So a .co site can target any market you choose.

Why is the .co term limited to five years?

The maximum term is a registry rule, recorded in the Amazon Route 53 table for .co. You can register or renew for one to five years at a time. To keep a .co for longer, renew before expiry, or turn on renewal from your balance in the client area.

Can I keep my .co if a company says it uses the same name?

A complaint alone does not move or suspend the name. Trademark disputes follow the .co registry's own dispute policy; check the registry's policy for its exact terms. We apply the final decision. Other claims need a decision from a Panamanian court.

Is .co good for a crypto project?

It can be. The name is short and reads as company, and payment here is in crypto. Remember our strict rules: crypto scams, wallet drainers and fake investment sites are fraud against victims and are suspended on a documented report. A legitimate project gets due process under Panamanian courts for any other complaint.
